The Pros and Cons of Visiting and Living in Huntsville, Alabama

Huntsville, Alabama

Huntsville, Alabama, is in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama. It is primarily in Madison County, but also extends into neighboring Limestone and Morgan counties. It is a high tech city that is also very much in touch with its 19th Century roots.

The Pros of Visiting Huntsville

Huntsville is called ‘the rocket city’ and has been involved closely with US space missions and in developing space technology since the 1950s. One of the main tourist attractions here is the US Space and Rocket Center – a fascinating museum that sheds more light on this industry, the the role played by the city. Here you can see the Saturn V rocket and space travel artefacts.

Natural attractions are also key features here. Visitors can explore the butterfly house and botanic wonders of Huntsville Botanical Garden. Nearby, you will also find the mountain trails and azaleas of Monte Sano State Park, and Buritt on the Mountain, where there are further nature trails and historic buildings, including the Buritt Mansion, which dates from the 1930s. There is an historical park here with 19th Century buildings that have been restored, and farm animals.

The Cons of Visiting Huntsville

Summers in Huntsville can be hot, so a visit at that time of year may not appeal to cool weather lovers.

Some attractions here are seasonal, for example, arts festivals and the weekly Greene Street Market, which runs May to October, so this may be a better choice for certain times of year rather than others.

The Pros of Living in Huntsville

Huntsville, with its high tech industries, is a highly educated city. There is an interesting mix of people, and more diversity than one would typically associate with the state. This is a place that circumvents many of the deep south stereotypes.

The surroundings of the city are truly lovely, as the Appalachian foothills descend into the verdant valley of the Tennessee River.

The cost of living here is relatively low when compared to many other cities around the US.

The Cons of Living in Huntsville

Some people moving here from elsewhere struggle with the stifling heat of the summer – while ideal for some, the weather here is not for everyone.

Allergies are a common problem here year round. Pollen gathers in the air here which can be a problem if you are prone to allergic rhinitis.

Politics here can be divisive. This is Alabama and ‘values voting’ can be an issue. If you are moving from a more liberal area, you may find Alabama’s voting record off-putting, and feel tension in the socio-cultural environment.

The above are just some of the things you should consider if you are considering a vacation or even a permanent move to Huntsville. Is this the right place for you?
