Sargassum Seaweed in Mexico and the Caribbean Problem

Sargassum seaweed on a beach

Current situation with seaweed in Mexico and the Caribbean does not look very good. Sargassum seaweed is floating towards the best Mexican beaches and does not let travelers enjoy what they came there for. Mexico has always had this problem but it was seasonal and you could easily avoid it by choosing the right time to go. In 2019 it started getting even worse. Not only swimming problem but bad smell coming from the seaweed makes people cancel their vacations.

According to the latest travelers reviews in some resorts the situation is really bad and some resorts are absolutely clean. If you have just came from your Mexican vacation, let us know in comments where it is clean and where is not.

Speaking about cleaning – Mexico does spend a lot of money on cleaning sargassum off it’s coast but unfortunately, it comes more and more. They say, it requires cleaning up to 3 times a day to keep the beaches clean. They can not just let it go as the beach is the main reason why tourists go there. The most popular areas are involved – Tulum, Riviera Maya, Playa Del Carmen. Some other Caribbean countries like U.S. Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic (Punta Cana)  are involved too.

Are there any no seaweed Mexico resorts now?

If you have already bought your vacation and do not want to cancel it, there is not much to do. But if you are still choosing a place to go, you can check local webcams with beaches online to see if there is seaweed currently or not. Reading reviews also help. But it is not possible to find seaweed reviews and updates for each and every hotel on Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Checking by beach name can narrow your search.

Unfortunately, now there is no way to predict how it will look like in future. For example, if you are looking for the seaweed situation in November or December, searching for previous years will not help. With all this going now in summer, nobody knows when it will clean up.

Where all that comes from?

According to some sources this huge amount of algae somehow increasing too much this year and getting off the northern coast of Brazil and related to Amazon river. Ocean currents brings it all to the Mexican hotels. Maybe climate and nature specialists know the answer to this question better. We, tourists just hope that it won’t be like that all the time as Mexico remains to be one of the best affordable resorts nowadays.

Normally, seaweed season in Mexico is from April to August but it is not as heavy as what is going on this year. Good news – a floating barrier was installed to protect the shores of Quintana Roo. Not sure if it is good for nature or not, but definitely good for all the tourists who invested in their vacations.

  1. End of June, 2019. Grand Bahía Príncipe Coba, Riviera Maya. Lots of seaweed. But the hotel set up some kind of net and it does help.
