El Gouna is a tourist resort built on a lagoon area on the Red Sea in the Sinai Peninsula. The name of the city means lagoon in Arabic. This very modern Egyptian city is becoming a popular resort destination. The city was developed and owned by the Orascom Hotels which still controls the area starting in 1990. The town has modern hotels ranging from one to five stars with another resorts under construction. Popular for its water sports guests can take advantage of scuba diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing, and snorkeling. Schools with arrange classes and tours for guests. Fishing and boat tours of the Red Sea area are also popular.
The town is also popular with families. Built on lagoons, it is walkable with lots of short bridges. Three areas of town are open to tourists featuring shopping, restaurants and bars. These are the Downtown, Tamr Henna Square and the Abu Tig Marina. El Gouna has three marinas with a fourth being built. Other attractions for families include an aquarium, a local museum, a go-kart track, a skate park, paintball arena and a football stadium. There is a kid’s club which hosts activities for kids that can act as a babysitter for parents. Smaller kids should not miss the fish and animal farm. Tennis courts, a golf course and horse stables are also near the resorts. Another golf course will open in 2012.
Most homes in el Gouna have a pathway to the local beach. There are two in el Gouna. The Mangroovy Beach is located on the edge of town and the Zeytuna Beach is located on its own island. Local ferries are provided to visit this area. The city itself was built at the same time and consists of buildings in the rounded Arabic architecture to help beat the heat in colors of beige, pink and gold that blend into the desert and the lagoons. Public transportation is mostly by trams provided by the local hotels.
El Gouna also has a modern medical center that draws people to this resort for medical travelers. Adept at plastic surgery and other medical treatments, many tourists come here to have surgery and recuperate at the resort. The medical center also has a modern treatment center for health problems that can occur with deep sea diving.
The major hotels are almost an attraction in their self. Featuring gardens, spas, beaches, tennis courts, bars, entertainment and private lagoons. Most hotels have WiFi available to their guests. Rooms are large and very clean. Restaurants on site provide great food. Whether you eat at the hotel or in town, this area is known for both is variety of cuisine and its excellent food.
