Famous Cherry Blossom that attracts lots of tourists to Japan every year is expected earlier in 2019 according to the Japan Meteorological Corporation. That’s kinda tricky to book tickets for nature related events like Northern Lights. Well, Somei Yoshino cherry trees at least last longer. Even if you are too early you have a chance to extend your trip.
Important! Cherry Blossom dates in Japan depend on its location. That’s why it’s important to check the city where you are going.
For example, Kochi Prefecture usually expects cherry blossom late March and early April. This year they say it’s going to start like March 18 and full bloom should reach by March 25. The blossom will go on in the cities in the following order: Fukuoka, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Tokyo.
It looks like in general, it’s expected to be early for 1 week and in Tokyo – about 4 days.
Some locations that are expected at the end of March and beginning of April are: Kagoshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Wakayama.
Some North prefectures will blossom in April and May: Miyagi, Aomori, Hokkaido.
Interesting to know: How do they predict Cherry Blossom? First of all it’s an unusual increase in air temperature. This affects the buds that are formed in summer and have to survive in winter.
Somei Yoshino is that famous tree that is so popular. But there is one more – Kawazu-zakura, that blossoms one month earlier. If you are in Japan like February, visit the town called Kawazu to see that tree.
Before you plan your trip to Japan for this nature wonder, visit Japan Meteorological Corporation website for details and full information.
By the way! If you live in the USA, Canada or somewhere close, you can watch Cherry Blossom in Washington DC. It starts late March and blooms the first part of April. Though, it’s better to check weather predictions before you go. In 2018 we tried it in late April and only a few trees opened their buds. National Cherry Blossom Festival 2019 in Washington DC is planned from March 21 to April 14th.
This is my picture from 2018 in Washington DC. It was a cloudy day and that’s all I could get. I will add new pictures of 2019 as soon as they bloom 🙂 . Share your Cherry Blossom pictures and experience of watching it in comments. Thanks!
