Fishing on Captiva Island

Captiva Island is connected to Sanibel Island by a bridge but that bridge really connects to different worlds. The islands are located in the Gulf of Mexico just off of Florida’s Southwest coast. They are situated between Fort Myers and Naples and are just a little closer to Fort Myers but easily accessible from both locations.

There really is something for everybody on these two islands and because they are both easily accessible from the other, you can have a vacation that is really two vacations rolled into one.

There are all of the usual tropical island vacation activities available on both islands. There are sandy beaches and wonderfully luxurious hotels. There are dining facilities that are designed to tempt any taste and diets are soon forgotten when vacationing on Sanibel and Captiva.

Upper Captiva Island is located close to Fort Myers. It is a small community in Lee County. There is a grass landing strip that can only be used by invitation. You can also get there by private boat or by using the local water taxi service. There are also scheduled water taxi services.

There are all of the usual island activities and amenities available but fishing is the biggie. Upper Captiva Island is a fisherman’s paradise. There are bays and estuaries and, of course, the Gulf of Mexico. Boats can be chartered for one-day fishing trips into the Gulf of Mexico or for multiple days of fishing. Tarpon, redfish, snook and grouper are some of the favorite catches.

Tarpon are always a big favorite but snook can be caught right off the beaches and redfish can be caught in the grass flats and back waters. A deep-sea fishing trip is a vacation memory that lasts a lifetime.

Upper Captiva is very close to both Sanibel and Captiva which are separate islands. Cabbage Key is very close to Upper Captiva. It is said that Cabbage Key provided the inspiration to Jimmy Buffet to write his famous song, “Cheeseburger in Paradise”.

The very location of Sanibel, Captiva and the surrounding smaller keys makes them an idea location for the avid sports fisherman’s dream vacation.

In addition to fishing and deep-sea fishing expeditions, there are also cruises that families and honeymooners  can enjoy around Sanibel and Captiva. These cruises will allow you to witness beautiful marine mammals jumping in the wake of comfortable cruise vessels. There are dolphin watch cruises as well as just wildlife cruises available. They all make the perfect setting for a family to enjoy a perfect cruise and there are always guides on these cruises that are there to provide information that will enhance the experience.

If you have had an exciting day of fishing, you can top off that perfect day with a sunset cruise that is nothing but pure and simple romance afloat. There is live music and a full service cash bar on these sunset cruises. There is nothing quite like watching the sun slip into the Gulf of Mexico at sunset!
