But in addition to considering whether or not you can visit for free, you may also like to consider the attractions of each of the seasons before you decide when is the best time for you to pay this place a visit. Read on to learn a little more.
Descanso Gardens in Spring
Descanso Gardens are famed for their collection of camellias, growing alongside old growth live oaks and azaleas. Both the camellias and their companion azaleas bloom from late January through April, and so spring is the best time to visit to see this collection, believed to be the largest in North America, looking at its best. Lilacs, and irises also bloom in the spring and are amongst the gardens’ finest attractions.
Descanso Gardens in Summer
Even after the camellias are no longer in bloom, the summer gardens still offer a breathtaking range of floral delights. Summer is a time when there is colorful blooming in abundance – not least in the beautiful rose gardens, which have more than 3,100 roses. These bloom year round but early summer is when the roses peak in their floral display.
Descanso Gardens in Fall
Fall is also a wonderful time for a visit here. The Japanese gardens with their maples and other colorful foliage displays are perhaps at their most astounding at this time of the year. The Japanese teahouse and garden offer the chance to relax and unwind with a spot of leaf-peeping and with time spent gazing into the soothing koi-filled streams.
Descanso Gardens in Winter
Even in winter the gardens have a certain tranquil charm. This could be a good time to see migratory bird species at the Bird Observation Station, overlooking a lake and sanctuary island for water fowl and other bird life. You could also consider spending some time in the gardens before heading to the Boddy House, the home built by the garden’s founder in 1938. It gives historical perspective and also includes an adjacent art gallery.
As you can see from the above, there is something to see and do here at Descanso Gardens throughout the year. No matter when you visit you are sure to be delighted by what you discover here.
