Jet lag — an annoying yet unavoidable challenge that all travelers have to face at some point when crossing multiple time zones.
What are the steps on how to avoid jet lag? Are we doomed to stumble off the plane in a zombie-like state in search of caffeine? How about waking up to find it’s already 5 in the afternoon? There are plenty of ways, follow our preferred 10 tips:
Before you fly:
1. Book overnight flights
Booking an overnight flight is a great start to avoid jet lag. You’ll likely arrive early in the morning or afternoon in time for lunch. Mentally you’ll be more refreshed after having slept on the plane. travelrows.com
2. Adjust sleep pattern
Plan ahead. The week or two leading up to your trip, adapt your sleeping schedule to coincide with that of the time zone you’re flying into.
Ex. Wake up at 8:00am their time; go to sleep at 12:00am their time. Whatever your preferred time to wake up and go to sleep; do it on their time.
3. Avoid caffeine or alcohol
Don’t put yourself through a preflight bender the night before your flight, you’re only setting yourself up for a world of pain.
Avoiding caffeine and alcohol the day before your flight will also prevent dehydration, caffeine jitters, and the dreaded hangover.
During your flight:
A great way to avoid jet lag during your flight is to maintain proper hydration. Opt for the water instead of the soda or coffee.
5. Get some sleep
If you followed our first tip, get some sleep on your overnight flight. Once you land you’ll be a bit more refreshed than if you hadn’t slept at all. It will feel like a new day and the timezone won’t hurt as much.
After your flight:
6. Light exercise in the morning
You’ve landed and checked in to your new home away from home. What now? Do some push ups, jumping jacks, go for a walk, etc.
Do something to get your blood flowing and heart pumping; become wide awake.
Don’t stay in your room any longer than you have to, light exercise, shower, and head outside to soak in some sunlight.
When the sun hits your optic nerves it sends a trigger to the brain to slow down the release of melatonin, the hormone that puts you to sleep. It also triggers the increase of serotonin, the neurotransmitter linked to feeling awake and happiness.
8. Live in the timezone
How to avoid jet lag now that you’re settled in? Live in your new time zone.
Have breakfast, lunch, and dinner at your usual times in that time zone. Wake up and go to sleep at your usual times in that time zone.
9. Avoid overeating and drinking
Try not to overeat and drink, the last thing you’ll want to do is doze off in a food coma.
10. Take Day 1 easy
On your first day, take it at a slow pace. Don’t plan time restricted activities, make major decisions or party too hard. Your goal is to go to sleep at the local time and wake up at the local time.
